Dear Gwenevere

Baby girl, you know I love you but you are killing me. When I walked into the barn this morning and found your leg swollen up like a balloon and warm to the touch, I almost screamed with frustration.

Really my dear, do you have the WORST immune system possible? How is it that after SEVEN MONTHS your leg still has not healed to the point where it won't open up the tiniest fraction and allow an infection in? Speaking of that, why is it that you get an infection every time you have the most minor laceration? It really is mind boggling.

Maybe you just really like the taste of SMZs? Well you're in luck, because you're going to be getting your fill of them for the next seven days.

  1. Oh, dear. This is not good. I am no expert and I don't know if this is appropriate, but I am a firm believer in salt water. Gem had a couple of open bloody scrapes from pacing in his stall and rubbing his back legs on the walls over and over when he first arrived. I cleaned them and soaked the wounds with salt water and the applied a little antibiotic cream. Worked like a charm. I've also heard you can keep gauze on a wound with panty hose - just cut the tops and feet off and put your horse leg through. It applies just enough pressure to hold the gauze in place without cutting off circulation/tissue damage. Geez, I hope Gwen feels better soon!

  2. Hi Wolfie, I'm trying your salt water theory. I went home after work and dug out the epsom salts before I went to the barn. I washed her leg off and couldn't find a spot of blood or a raw mark anywhere. I have no idea where the infection came from but the SMZs should knock it out. It made for a rough day worrying about her.

  3. I bet you were worried! I hope it works for you. What is SMZs? An antibiotic?

  4. It's short for sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim or SMZ & TMP. Yup, it's an antibiotic. People can actually use it too if you get the correct dosage from your doctor. Which will be helpful with the bloody big bottle that I have of it.
