This is what Coriander greeted me with today:
Coriander's leg wound |
Add that on top of the swelling Gwen's had on her chest and neck for the past week and a half and my horses are just smashing (themselves to pieces).
Gwen's chest swelling |
Hello vet appointment.
They are always trying to do themselves in aren't they? Keep us posted.
ReplyDeleteOnce the vet does their thing - I highly recommend veterycin if you don't already use it (and I haven't already recommended it lol). Super wound healer and the hydro-gel sticks to vertical surfaces...
Thanks for the tip, I've sprayed Well-Horse on it for now, figured that would keep the bugs off at least.
DeleteOuch! I wish they would cut that stuff out, mine are always hurting themselves too. With seven of them someone's always got a cut or scrape or whatever. Like CFS said after the vet I would recommend the veterycin too. we use it a lot and it works. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteWith 7 horses you must be finding something new every day! I think I'd lose my mind.
DeleteWell, horses *are* glass-legged suicide machines constantly searching for the most expensive and least convenient way to die! ;-) Lol. Those wounds look totally manageable, although I know they're never fun (especially when they take away from riding!).
ReplyDeleteI really like Well Horse, it's a great product. And my personal fave wound cleaner is chlorhexadine. Never tried Vetericyn, it seems like a bit of a rip-off to me ($$$ for what is basically water, salt, & bleach IIRC).
I've had good luck with Well Horse so far, we'll see how it works for this wound. I'll have to look into chlorhexadine, thanks.
DeleteIt's always amazing what trouble they can get into!
ReplyDeleteSure is, plus I went out last night and Gwen had a bloody mark on the other side of her neck. Good grief!
DeleteI feel your pain. Harley scraped his leg on a fallen tree. It is not serious, but I have to keep washing it and putting fly gel around it. The cut on Coriander's leg looks kind of nasty. I hope the vet appointment goes well.
ReplyDeleteI hope Harley is doing better now.
DeleteThanks for your concern everybody :)
ReplyDeleteThe vet didn't seem too concerned from the picture, I was worried that he'd sliced the skin upward and would need stitches but upon further inspection it looks like those two gouges are really it. No heat and no swelling this morning, I'm going to keep a sharp, beady eye on it but I think he's going to be fine.
Good grief. I am glad that your vet doesn't think there's cause for concern. Speedy recovery, Coriander! Swelling be gone, Gwen!
ReplyDeleteGwen got her first dose of arnica this morning, hopefully it will start to make a difference.
DeleteI have to say I actually had to decide to stop posting about injuries, it was just too depressing. This year alone, I've had Cassie's legs stitched up twice, then there was another occasion when she got trapped in a briar patch and had numerous lacerations on her hind legs, fortunately not deep enough to need stitches. Then she was lame so I couldn't take her to the Alexandra Kurland clinic, when she seemed sound she bruised her heel bulb and got an absess and now she's got hives. Grrr! Do you think she could possibly related to your two? Oh, and at the moment I have to give Minnie a daily injection of anti-biotics because she got a scratch on her hind leg and it blew up like a balloon. At this rate I'm seriously wondering if I will ever ride again...
ReplyDeleteMurphy's Law for horses: if there is anything out there that could possibly injure a horse, they will find it (and size of the pasture is irrelevant!).
Hugs to you, having hurt horses stinks!
DeleteMakes one wonder exactly HOW do horses survive in the wild! ?
ReplyDeleteLOL! Yeah, I wonder that too!
DeleteGosh Shannon!! Those look terrible!! Fenceline walking and pasture patrol!
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck did they find for themselves!!??
Veterycn is AWESOME, I too recommend it. Arnica too.
So sorry, hang in.
All the horses, but mine and her pasture mate, have sustained injury this summer. I am praying I go summer, into fall and winter this time, without injury.
KK
They look terrible in general right now, Gwen especially. It's bumming me out :(
DeleteSo I need to keep Veterycin and Benadryl on hand? Got it. Glad Dee healed so well, she's too pretty for scars ;)
