Super quick update

Gwen cantered under saddle for the first time yesterday- and I'm here to talk about it!

We were trotting uphill in the field across from the pasture when she spooked a little at a bird in a tree. Instead of flying sideways she just picked up a canter. I let her go for a few strides before I brought her down from a trot. Let me tell you, it was lovely. She was smooth and round and everything that I knew she'd be.

I did not ask her for it so I didn't reward her. I'm not ready for her to think that cantering is great and she needs to do it all the time. But when we're ready- she's going to be brilliant.

Also, she's learning lateral movement.

We're making progress!

  1. Sounds good. You and Gwen are making progress. And now you know how her canter feels. And most importantly you're here to tell about it. I have a feeling it won't be long before you two are cantering all over the fields!

  2. Sounds wonderful! So nice to know that a beautiful canter is there waiting for you. Also it's great that it just 'happened' with no pressure or stress for her. Clearly there are great thing to come.

  3. I haven't had much time to comment lately, but just had to tell you I LOVE the header photo (such a cute picture and such happy expressions from both of them) and I share your excitement about the cantering. Sounds like she's even starting to develop a feeling of responsibility for you while you're on her back...and that is a sign of a mature horse who cares a lot about her rider!

  6. Oh that's so great! Gwenny is really lovely and neato that she's got that supremely delicious canter waiting to be tapped!

    Happy happy times!
